hello friends – I apologize for the length between posts these few weeks, life and all its ups and downs has been filling out every inch of our days of late leaving little time to actually tell you about those ups and downs. I’m hopeful to begin catching you up on some highlights, low-lights and the mentionable middle-ground.

In the spring I made a conscious decision to pursue new creative ground for myself as a personal summer project of sorts. I blogged a bit about my experience participating in a creative “boot camp” here, and also back in May you may recall this post about my first attempt at partnering with another photographer for the Miss Match diptych project. I originally planned to post my diptych images each week as they were completed, and well, here it is three months later… So today I have one large post to recap the past 11 weeks of images. Each week I was paired up with another photographer and given a theme to interpret. I’ve posted my images for each week, and if you would like to see the final result of both photos matched up, I’ve included a slide show at the end of the post.

The opportunity to collaborate with other artists from all over the world has been humbling, challenging and enlightening for me. To connect with female photographers from Sweden, the UK, France, Canada and all over the U.S. has broadened my perspective on my own work, and far exceeded my goal of branching out this summer. When I look at these photos, I keep thinking this beautiful July evening in Michigan was a sweet calm before one treacherous storm. The smiles and laughter shared capturing Rick and Jen’s first family photos in 15 years was especially fun for me, as these lovelies are my family… aunt, uncle, cousins whom I love, but due to about 500 miles between our homes, am not able to spend time with nearly as often as I’d like. Just days following our time together, this family, daughter, son, grandchildren, was hit with the sudden and unexpected deaths of two matriarchs, two grandmothers, all within a span of three days. Still, amidst great heartbreak there are smiles to be shared. They may be smiles behind tears for now, but heart and strength remain at their core. And while it’s hard to watch anyone walk through the hurt that accompanies grief, especially when it hits close to home, these images are a gentle reminder… live even the smallest of chapters joyfully, soak up the in-betweens, and relish every sweet calm that drifts our way.

gravitational pull

Emma, our oldest, is spending a few days in Michigan with her grandparents and I am missing her somethin’ fierce! The child who talks more than the rest of us combined, who often asks me the same question ten times daily, who refuses to “remember” how to keep her bedroom tidy…that sweet, lively, at-times exhausting child makes my world go ’round and when she’s gone the whole house is just off. Emma has a pull that way, draws people in, loves them well and leaves them laughing more times than not.

Before dropping her off at the sugar factory her grandparents’, Rob and I were able to spend a day with Em at our favorite amusement park, Cedar Point. Having grown over six inches (!!!) since last summer, she was tall enough to ride some of the “big” roller coasters. We sincerely had one the funnest days I can recall, and of course caught some bits on video including her maiden “big” roller coaster voyage. My missing her could be a factor here, but I have watched this probably twenty times and laughed until I cried every time. For all those joyous people in our lives who seem to emit an actual gravitational pull of fun, cheers to you!

the ebb, flow, & bedhead

A former coworker once described parenting as looking into a mirror that magnifies all your best and worst qualities. One beautiful mess. At the time, I had yet to enter into parenthood, and still the illustration stuck with me. All these years later, it’s safe to say I now experience what that seasoned parent was trying to convey, every single day. These mini people are just that, people, temporarily packaged pint sized, but people all the same. And along with their people-ness comes people-ish things- short tempers, tears, belly laughs and more tears. Quite often all of these emotions can happen in the span of 13 minutes or less, and so life goes. The ups, the arounds, the downs.

There are days that flow with sweet:

And there are days when just waking up is unjust:

In parenting and in living, those sweet days are so much easier to swallow than the others, but growth happens in the rough waters- the unjust places. Staring into the reflection of parenthood and seeing things I’ve never liked about myself on a child I’m madly in love with, offers unique clarity, conviction and ultimately (if chosen) the perspective to mature. And perspective allows me to smile (and grab the camera) in the midst of this:

Because I know before it’s time for second breakfast we could be right back around to the sweet:

freedom {to create}

This summer I set out with the goal of dedicating time to learning and growing in my work. In June I took part in a personal creative project, the Creativity Boot Camp, led by a wonderful artist Maegan Beishline and it was just the sort of motivation I was seeking to push myself in developing my craft. I thought on this weekend of celebrating our freedom here in the States, I’d share some of my CBC images and encourage you in this season to allow yourself the freedom to dream, fail, grow, create.

Grayson at 8 months || Nashville Baby Photographer, Centennial Park

Hard to believe, but it is already time to meet up with Mr. Grayson again for his eight month session, part of his My First Story package. Okay, so technically I think it may have been closer to nine months by the time we worked around those pesky Tennessee spring thunderstorms, but you get the idea. I met up with Grayson and his gorgeous mama for an afternoon in the park and despite the heat, had great fun “chasing” the little guy around. Still a few months from his first birthday, Grayson appears to want to skip that crawling phase altogether and get straight to the running. To think in December when we captured Grayson at four months, he was showing off how he could hold his head up and now he’s trying to walk! I won’t be surprised at his one-year shoot when he shows me how to dribble a soccer ball. Thank you for a fun session- see you soon Carr family!

“Do you think everyone has this pull inside of them to be near the ocean?”

“No, I don’t.”

“…Well it’s in me. I can’t seem to shake it.”

At the end of May our little family made a somewhat impulsive decision to pack up and head to the ocean for a week. As exhausting as it can be “vacationing” with young children, I know every single one of us is so glad we did. Personally, I appreciate the opportunity it gave us to financially support in our tiny way, a region being devastated by a ridiculous oil spill… And in the wise words of Forrest Gump, ‘that’s all I have to say about that.’

I just went back and reread this post from our last beach trip in August. It comes at no surprise in the months since then time has nudged us along- situations have changed, babies have grown and hundreds of sunsets have performed their daily beauty. And still the beach beckons us, the pull stronger with every visit, to where I’m left in love…unable to shake it.

happy Monday friends – if you have been following the blog recently you know I have been playing a round of “shop tag” with other exhibitors from the paper ‘n stitch website, and my shop was tagged a week or so ago by p.s. it’s in the details. Well on Friday I received word I had been tagged again, this time by an amazing handmade bag designer Jennie N. Design! Being tagged again was completely unexpected and I am humbled and grateful to have been featured on Jenny’s site and now have the honor of showcasing another artist here. And I have chosen to tag Tania from Indo Bay Textiles!

Not only does Tania create refreshingly modern hand-printed textiles, she is also the brains behind this whole “shop tag” fiesta. There is no telling how many hours she has invested in planning and coordinating this effort, all for the sake of promoting other artists. Tania, your thoughtfulness and time have not gone unnoticed – many thanks to you!

I love the simplicity of Tania’s pieces, while appreciating the craftsmanship and personal touch she incorporates into each item. Her shop is full of self-proclaimed “perfectly imperfect” textiles and modern goods, celebrating the charm that accompanies hand-printed pieces. I encourage you to visit her shop and find a treasure or two for your home. Tania… you’re IT!
